Tank Scrap
Scraps
Once a banner had been raised, or a class numerals had been painted, it immediately presented a challenge to the rival class. For one class the offending banner had to be replaced and for the other the banner needed defending. When members of the two rival classes met during these activities a brawl or "scrap" occurred. One of these scraps took place in the chapel in University Hall. When the Tank became the focus of this rivalry the scrap quickly became an annual ritual that over time became more and more formalized. The earliest known image of a scrap . The battle was between the Classes of '98 and '99. The image shows one student pouring a bucket of paint on to the head of another. The victim was Charles F. Breen, Class of '98.
