In the early years the freshmen may have waited for six hours or more before the sophomores arrived. Many times their arrival was announced by the firing of a signal rocket sent off by freshmen scouts. The sophomores arrived at the tank and formed up. For about a half hour or more the two sides exchanged insults and chanted their class yells. The sophomores then arranged themselves in their attack formation, a flying wedge , in military lines of battle, or a T-formation , for example. Unit of reserves were formed by both sides for an unexpected reversal of fortunes. Either a yell from the sophomore scrap leader or a rocket signaled the attack, the sophomores charged.
