Today
The women's suffrage movement left a lasting legacy in the history of the United States and
around the world. Enfranchised women could vote for the change they wanted to see, forcing
politicians to consider women’s needs and issues. However, in their desire to secure the vote,
white suffragists left many women and fellow suffragists behind, a trend we still see in some
movements today.

Women continue to fight for equal rights, such as equal pay, reproductive rights, equal
representation, and more, using many of the same tactics used by suffragists and abolitionists.

What the women’s suffrage movement and many social justice movements have shown us is
that rights are not given, but are hard earned through the tireless work of activists, over
decades and through generations, and it is this activism that precipitates change.
