John F. McLaughlin

Dr. McLaughlin is professor mmeritus of Civil Engineering at Purdue University. His association with the university dates from 1950, when he began graduate study in materials engineering after receiving a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University. After his first year, he became an instructor. He joined the faculty in 1957, and rose up the academic ranks over the next decade, researching the fatigue properties of lightweight concrete and related topics in materials engineering.

From 1968 to 1978, Dr. McLaughlin served as head of Civil Engineering. From 1978 until his retirement, he served as assistant and associate dean of engineering. On two occasions during his time as associate dean, he served as interim or acting dean. Indeed, he delayed his retirement for one year to serve as interim dean when Dr. Henry T. Yang left to become chancellor at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dr. McLaughlin has continued to live in West Lafayette since his retirement.
