A Chicagoland native, Mark Perniconi earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from Purdue University.

He went to work for W. M. Lyles Company, a family-owned company that did business in California's Central Valley. From 1976 to 1983, Perniconi was project manager on many infrastructure, irrigation, power, and telephone distribution projects.

Perniconi then returned to Purdue, where he earned an MBA. While recruiting engineers on campus, Thomas D. Verti discussed the Pankow company's need for people on the development side of the business with Perniconi, and offered him a job as vice president of real estate operations. Perniconi began working in early 1985. Within a week, Jon Eicholtz, who headed the group, left the company. Most of the people who worked for him followed Eicholtz out the door. Perniconi and one or two other people remained. They reported to Russell J. Osterman, one of the original partners in Charles Pankow, Inc., who headed the development efforts of the firm.

Perniconi worked for Pankow until 1997. During that time, he was responsible for the operations and development of company-owned real estate and provided real estate services to third-party clients. He engaged in asset acquisition, management, and disposition, construction management, financial analysis and budgeting, loan procurement, and office leasing. Unwinding the partnership interests of Charlie Pankow and Russ Osterman in several development entities after the latter retired in 1989 proved to be a particularly delicate task.

Since 1998, Perniconi has worked for C. E. John Company as vice president of development, with responsibility for developing new assets and redeveloping existing ones.

In June 2012, Perniconi was appointed the new Executive Director of the Charles Pankow Foundation, succeeding Robert K. Tener who retired in 2012.

He is a full member of the Urban Land Institute and a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, a trade association. He is licensed as both a civil engineer and real estate broker in the State of California.
